French butter dish, green (1334)

A French butter dish glazed green. A French butter dish is used to keep butter safely at room temperature for extended periods of time. By adding a bit of cool water to the outer cup, a seal is formed to protect the butter in the inner cup from outside air, extending its usable time. 

Note that for this specific dish there appear to be holes on the inner cup, but they have been sealed by glaze.
